When dealing with Home Healthcare applications, the main goal is often based on economical aspects such as the minimization of costs or the maximization of profits. These formulations prioritize the hospital's interests, neglecting the needs of the other stakeholders. However, an efficient Home Healthcare system relies on the satisfaction of all the actors involved (from the hospital to the patients and the professional caregivers) and is able to guarantee that their often-conflicting perspectives are included in the decision process. The concept of fairness allows to include in the optimization both employee and customer-centered measures and compare them with the hospital ones. A lexicographic approach is presented to solve a Tri-Objective mathematical formulation of a Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) where nurses are routed to visit patients at their homes. Interactions among inter and intra-actors’ measures are evaluated in small-size instances. In conclusion, an overview of a Multi-Objective VRP in Home Hospitalization is presented to furnish an indication of the direction of future research in related fields.
Valentina Bonomi is currently a PhD candidate in Information Engineering at University of Brescia (Italy), under the supervision of Prof. Renata Mansini. Her research focuses on Rich Vehicle Routing Problems with applications to Healthcare and Last-Mile logistics. She earned her MSc in Management Engineering at University of Brescia (Italy) after a research period at the research center CIRRELT at Université Laval (Quebec, Canada). She is currently a visiting PhD student at University of Lisbon, Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal). Since 2020 she is teaching assistant for the course Operations Research and Mathematical Analysis.
