Soaring health care spending, especially after the COVID19 pandemic, has made it more essential than ever to find ways to increase the efficiency of health care systems to make them more sustainable. In this context, the use of quantitative techniques, typical of operations management/operational research, is essential. However, theoretical models do not necessarily translate into solutions capable of having an impact in real-life contexts. Bringing innovations in health systems requires changing and managing processes that are largely influenced by patients, in an environment "dominated" by highly-skilled professionals resistant to change. This seminar will present the results of an action research, carried out as a part of a doctoral project, that led to the reengineering of a major children's hospital's elective surgery scheduling process, the development of novel optimization and simulation models supporting the reengineered process, the creation of a scheduling software embedding the models, the implementation of such software and, finally, to the quantification of the benefits achieved with a before and after analysis.
