Summary

Plastics can help face many societal challenges. However, the steady increase in plastic production over the years has resulted in the significant accumulation of plastic waste on a global scale. So, urgent approaches are needed to reduce plastic consumption and increase its reusability and recyclability, which in turn depends on innovations and the development of new technologies for materials, products, and processes, in line with the principles of Circular Economy (CE). Considering the advanced institutional stage of the European Union in the transition to the CE of plastics, as well as its leadership role at a global level and potential to represent a benchmark for countries that are lagging in this issue, this research has the objective to carry out a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) addressing the transition to CE of the plastic packaging industry supply chain in Europe, as well as to present some preliminary results of a field research on the specific case of Portugal. The main theoretical contributions are the outlining and discussion of three key improvements necessary to accelerate this transition to the CE, and the consolidation of different categories of initiatives and barriers, adding knowledge on the topic in a way that is not restricted to the researched context.
