Maria Eugénia Leitão is a Researcher at both CEG-IST and IN+, where she is investigating how technology can be used to further contribute to the generation of social impact on underserved communities. She is a PhD student in Engineering and Management at IST, working directly with professors Miguel Amaral and Ana Carvalho on Social Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation. The provisional title of her thesis is “Humanitarian engineering: the role played by engineering, technology-based entrepreneurship and innovation in addressing underserved communities’ needs”. She has participated in conferences besides having published the first conceptualization of Socio-Tech Entrepreeneurship in "Technovation". Maria Eugénia holds a BA and MA on Literature by FCSH/UNL. Having worked as Communications Specialist at McKinsey & Company for 7 years, Maria Eugénia developed several business consulting skills, which she put into practice for the creation and implementation of “É Dado”, a social entrepreneurship project developed for Cáritas. She has been serving the country as head of cabinet at President Ramalho Eanes’s office for over 2 decades. President and Mrs. Eanes’ social responsibility ethics are a daily inspiration for Maria Eugénia, who aims to give back to society more than she has received from it. Also, her husband and their three children, who are amazing human beings, give her the strengths to fight for a fair present, since, as Fernando Pessoa said: “the present is all the past and all the future”.
