Miguel Alves Pereira is a Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Systems Engineering and Management at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa (IST ULisboa), Portugal. He combines rigorous research with a strong dedication to teaching and student mentorship, having supervised a total of 34 master's and doctoral students, including current and former students, and participated in over 30 academic examination committees. This commitment highlights his role in fostering the next generation of researchers and professionals. Miguel previously served as Adjunct Assistant Professor at Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP), as a Post-doctoral Researcher at FEUP and INESC TEC, and as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at RMIT Europe in Barcelona. He earned his doctoral degree in Engineering and Management at IST ULisboa in 2021, awarded “Pass with Distinction and Honour”, following an integrated master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the same institution. His academic development was enriched by training at prestigious summer schools at the Technical University of Crete and Wageningen University & Research, as well as by attending complementary pedagogical courses. Miguel’s research focuses on operational research and management science (OR/MS) and analytics, with a particular interest in efficiency, productivity, and decision analysis models. These models have been applied across diverse sectors, including health, water and sanitation, education, sustainable development, energy, and climate change. He is the author of more than two dozen scientific publications and an active ad hoc referee for over 60 international peer-reviewed journals. His research contributions also extend to six funded projects – three national and three international – and two consultancy projects. Beyond his research output, Miguel is a member of five scientific societies and has participated in 35 national and international scientific events. His expertise has been recognised with 14 invitations to speak at such events, showcasing his active engagement in disseminating knowledge and advancing his field. Miguel’s career reflects his commitment to integrating high-quality research, impactful teaching, and meaningful contributions to the academic community.
